Naruto Chapter 402: Last Words

Summary: Sasuke reflects on the past and remembers Itachi's habit of showing affection by tapping Sasuke's forehead and saying 'Sorry, next time.' He also recalls that Itachi's last words were 'Sorry, this is the last time.' Mourning for his bother, Sasuke renames Team Snake to Team Eagle, with their new objective being the destruction of Konoha. (read 402 here)

Serenphoria Says:

Lovely lovely lovely moments of nostalgia; Itachi's actions now have a new feeling of gentleness and sincerity. How could our heartstrings not be pulled by the revelation of Itachi's last words and the affection in his smile.

And then Sasuke goes and gets it all wrong.

Wrong wrong wrong.

So assuming the flashback was Sasuke's (whether real or not) it seems like he's accepted his brother as worthy of mourning. And also, apparently, revenge. He's really a one-trick pony, isn't he? I'm not even going to excuse him for being a maladjusted teenage boy. You do NOT honor your brother by destroying what he sacrificed everything for to protect.

Those new eyes had better be him under hypnosis.

Stupid Sasuke ruining a perfectly lovely chapter. Bah.

(And what happened to Kisame?)

P.S. If Madara could get Sasuke a new shirt, could he not have provided new pants too? Ones that fit and does not require a rope to hold up? Is that too much to ask? =(

I was all wangst-i-fied with this one, too... that smile! T_T ... and then he cries. Daaammn, that made me happy.

I guess Sasuke still hates Itachi a little bit... which would be the only reason, really, that I can think of, for him to turn against Konoha. o_0 Apparently he cares more about Uchiha's honor and strength than Konoha itself...

And there's so many things begging to be said about those new eyes. Star of David? Flower Power? A NUCLEAR WEAPON? lol.

btw, of course Madara can't give Sasuke proper pants that fit! After all, he wants easy access doesn't he? XD

... I dunno what happened to Kisame, either. Apparently no one cares about the awesome sharkman... o_o

Also, just out of curiousity, are you planning to comment on 403 today, too, or will that wait until next week? Just wondering, that's all ^^

Yes, Itachi's mumblings was good indeed, like you said and incredibly sad D: I entertained the idea that Itachi said "Foolish little brother." one last time, but in a more affectionate and rueful way. And, yes, I like when Itachi says that. If only because we all feel the need to say (shout) that at him from time to time... and poke him too :P What did you think Itachi said?

Ah, the flashbacks... Itachi really was a good big brother, huh? Also, Sasuke was so damn cute at that age. Everyone else see that godzilla plushie? Man that insane urge to squeeze little Sasuke and squeal... I hope I'm not alone.

Sasuke finally cries. It's a good thing he's letting out these feelings, but WHY DOES NO ONE HUG HIM!?

NARUTO YOU BETTER HUG HIM WHEN YOU SEE HIM!

"Crush Konoha." Sasuke says, and I can only sigh. Can anyone say they're honestly surprised at this? Also, we all know what this means right?

Another Valley of the End.

I'll admit that years before now when I was reading the manga during that part (and the agonizing one week for one chapter set up that I eternally curse, now and forever.), with Naruto trying his best to bring Sasuke back and looking so heartbroken and Sasuke doing his best to kill his closest friend and looking so triumphant... I cried. And if any of you, good sirs and madams, haven't at least gotten a bit misty eyed than you are dead inside.

I'm sure we all know that the new VotE will be a thousand times worse and instead of heartbreaking it will be soul shattering, because we all can't help but think one of them will die.

If such a thing does come to pass I'm hoping it will be Naruto.

Now before anyone tries to kill me through the internet. I say this because if Sasuke dies, then all the sacrifices Naruto, Sakura and to a lesser extent everyone else involved with the Sasuke retrieval mission (hell, Itachi most of all) made would have been for nothing.

Remember Sarutobi's funeral? For some reason the conversation Naruto had with Iruka and Kakashi keeps coming back to me. You know when Naruto asked (It's been a while, so bear with me.) 'why would someone risk their lives for other people' and Kakashi speaks of the importance of bonds and Iruka says 'You'll understand someday.'

Perhaps its all ready come to pass with the VotE, but I can't help the sense of foreboding I get when I think of that.

One last thing. I just found this AMV that I've been watching a lot called I live no more to shame Er, that's the first time I did something like that so if it doesn't work just look for 'I live no more to shame by DragonNinjaYuffe on youtube.

It's a Sasuke centric AMV using a song I've never heard of before. It's different, but give it a chance you'll probably grow to like it (I did after the second time I saw it.). It also has the dubious honor of showing me that the VotE still effects me after all these years.

...

Let it be know that Nemesis Jedi is a GIGANTIC SAP *crawls off into the corner of woe*

I accept that others are moved by this tragic turn of events. I'm not. Mostly because the Uchiha are freakin' annoying. And extremists. My clan uber alles vs. Konoha is SUPREME!!! There can be no compromise. And that's why there are no Uchiha in Konoha's diplomatic corps. That and they've all be horrifically slaughtered. That puts a damper on things. And Sasuke, in typical fashion, can't seem to hold a balanced viewpoint about ANYTHING. He probably has extreme viewpoints about daisies. His brother is an evil, clan-murdering bastard who hates joy, sunshine, puppies, babies, and kittens (and I like this one!) OR he's a loving soul who's been martyred on the altar of civic duty. He never looks for his own manipulation. And that's why he sucks. It's also why I'm not at all sorry for him. Nor am I sorry for Itachi. Both made extreme choices and I doubt all angles were considered. Still, they chose. Now those cartoons get to live (or die of a Gold Rush Era Disease, in Itachi's case) with the ramifications. See that cliff, Uchiha? You've just jumped off it. No, you can't fly.

That having been said, I still like Madara. What a manipulative bastard! Hooray! And he's good at manipulating Sasuke (although the Dread Pirate is such a dim bulb, it's the test of an idiot to NOT be able to manipulate him). I suppose that on some level, Naruto could be considered to be a better brother to Sasuke when compared to Itachi. He never tries to deceive or manipulate him. He asks him to come back, he threatens to drag him back, but he doesn't play with his emotions and trick him back. That honesty marks a healthier relationship than the one between Itachi and Sasuke (however allegedly loving), because it implies a relationship between equals, who need no coercion. And Sasuke's upfront with Naruto. (I hate you, I don't hate you, I'm still gonna kill you. He's not kidding.)

Also: at least Itachi DID have an ulterior motive for hanging out with the Superfriends. Because the evil plan (in all of its forms) is still just plain STUPID.

I can't believe I devoted all of five minutes' thought to a relationship between manga characters. My consolation is that I had to do the same thing in English class, and the relative value's just the same. This is much more fun.

But screw that! What IS up with Sasuke's pants? Does M.C. Hammer know he stole them? I know! He must have chosen them for the message! Konoha- Can't Touch This!(*cue theme*) Stop! Sasuke Time! (Breakit down, yo!)

@snowdevil

Yeah, Sasuke has been raised (and manipulated by Itachi) to value his pride as an Uchiha above all things. Can't blame him, but it's sad thinking that he's made no strong bonds with Konoha to even struggle with his decision to destroy it.

Yikes, we're getting a little riske with the Sasu/Mada reference aren't we. I actually also though the power exchange was also highly (symbolically) suggestive, but to keep this bog family friendly, I will keep my comments to myself.

@Jedi

I'm a total sap too, and my heart pulls in directions my brain knows I shouldn't chapter to chapter, which you can probably tell from the fluctuative options in the posts.

Yes, another VotE. I'm hoping that it'll actually NOT be as heartbreaking b/c Naruto will bring more rationality and strategy to the confrontation, but since they have to show off all their new moves, you know they're going to brawl no matter what. -sigh-

Yeah, I totally don't mind if Naruto dies (like I wouldn't have minded if Harry died in HP), as long as both Naru and Sasu complete their character arc. If Sasu doesn't get something out of the sacrifice, then I will be upset.

Ah! I recognized Nightwish from the AMV just from the style. There's a really good FMA AMV set to Nightwish's Nemo that I recommend if you haven't seen it.

@Taters

Oh Taters, I wish you were also into Katekyo Hitman Reborn (my latest obsession) b/c then when I say EXTREME DAISIES!! it would mean something to you.

You're right about the Uchiha, they are a prime example of why in-breeding is bad and it will take an outsider to save the Uchiha from themselves and their clothes.

*cue Hammer theme* Ohooooh ohooh -beat- ohoh ohoooh!
